Abel Trujillo didn’t precisely sprint across the finish line after an intense battle against Jordan Rinaldi, but he did do simply enough to squeak out a win.

On the strength of his counter punching and a couple of vital takedowns, Trujillo (15-6 MMA, 6-2 UFC) outpointed a game Rinaldi (12-5 MMA, 0-1 UFC), winning a unanimous decision victory with ratings of 29-28 throughout the board.

The light-weight bout was part of today’s UFC Fight Night 88 preliminary card at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following earlier prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

Though frequently recognized for his unexpected bursts of power on the feet, it was his takedowns that likely made the difference for Trujillo in this fight. He got them early and he got them frequently, though perhaps most significantly he got them at some vital minutes.

It was a Trujillo takedown in the opening frame that helped seal the round in his favor, for example, so it just made good sense that he’d go back to the well in the 2nd. That’s where he almost got himself in trouble, however, as Rinaldi threatened with two different armbar efforts off his back, prior to going back to his feet and taking Trujillo down late in the round.

As soon as Rinaldi got the fight to the floor on his own terms, he quickly transferred to take Trujillo s back and invested the remainder of the 2nd round digging for a choke, albeit unsuccessfully.

With both guys looking spent to start the third, it was another key takedown from Trujillo that assisted tip the scales in his favor, as he managed to get a breather and a few positive marks from the judges while working his ground-and-pound from Rinaldi s guard.

While Rinaldi would get one more chance to lock up a submission from his back, as well as another opportunity through a stand-up by referee Herb Dean, already he seemed too exhausted making it count. Trujillo, already, was content to wait it out until the final horn, confident that the judges would give him the battle.

The win for Trujillo makes it formally 3 straight, though the very first victory because streak came by means of a failed drug test by opponent GleisonTibau after their battle in November. Rinaldi’s loss snaps a five-fight winning streak.
